So we built the opposite of a social network. GetFriendly is a calm, private, human place for one simple thing: helping adults make real, platonic friends.
Somewhere in adulthood, making friends quietly got hard. You move for work, you have children, you change careers, you retire — and one day you notice the easy friendships of school and your twenties were never replaced. People can be surrounded by colleagues, contacts and followers and still go weeks without a real conversation.
Adult loneliness is now recognised as a serious public-health concern. Yet the apps people reach for are built for something else entirely. Dating apps centre on appearance and romance. Social media optimises for engagement and reach — feeds, follower counts and algorithmic loops that can deepen isolation rather than relieve it.
GetFriendly addresses the gap directly: a safe, calm space designed for one outcome — two compatible people, nearby, actually meeting and becoming friends.
No public feed. No endless scroll. No likes, followers or influencers. No advertising or tracking. No algorithmic engagement loops. No appearance-based matching. No vanity counts. If a design would feel at home in a dating app or a social network, it doesn’t belong here.
GetFriendly is paid for by its members, not by advertisers — and the door is open: the app is free to download and join, and during our launch every Plus feature is free for everyone. Later, money will only change hands when someone chooses more. Friendly+ helps a person grow their circle; Friendly Partner lets a verified venue host real-world events; and community organisations and charities are always free, because bringing people together for public good is the mission. Because nobody’s attention is for sale, the design never needs to grab, hook or interrupt.
The bigger picture
Step back, and GetFriendly is more than a friendship app. By putting people, safe places, real-world events and verified community organisations onto one map, it becomes something larger: the people and places near you that help you feel less alone. And it all starts with one simple, honest promise — helping adults make real friends.
We’re live now — starting in central Scotland and growing town by town, because friendship is local. Every Plus feature is free during our launch.
